The Emberwatch

Those who would plunder the mines beneath the Ashenmont are liable to be set upon the tireless immortals of the Emberwatch: its deft leader roaming from plains of Aqshy, Ardorn Flamerunner;  Farasa Twice-risen, bringing death from the dark with her twin blades; and Yurik Velzaine, able to alter enchanted ammunition of his crossbow at his command. The Emberwatch roil in the depths like a thunderhead, stealing upon foes with terrible swiftness.

Zondara's Gravebreakers - Cracktomb & Pikk

In between other projects, I converted and painted two zombies from Warhammer Underworlds Zondara's Gravebreakers warband. Cracktomb was originally armed with a hammer and a chisel, and Pikk - well - with a pick. I wanted to save the equipment for a future dreg body snatchers project and for some Sigmarites, so I gave the zombies hands from the Deadwalker Zombies box. Pikk’s original hair sculpt was a bit clunky,  so I covered it with cotton-swab fibres using Dark Ages Workshop's method. Enjoy!

W związku z zaproponowanym przez Bahiora z the Dark Oak listopadowym tematem Figurkowego Karnawału Blogowego - „Wnętrze” - odkopałem (hehe) zombiaczki z underworldsowej ekipy Zondara's Gravebreakers. Kluczowe było dla mnie, że mamy tu bezpośredni wgląd w ich wnętrze - pod skórę czaszki i w klatkę piersiową. 

Ze względu na fakt, że zgodnie z fluffem pomagają tytułowej nekromantce wdzierać się do wnętrz krypt i sarkofagów, oryginalnie ludziki były wyposażone w kilof, młotek i dłuto. Chcąc zachować te sprzęty na potrzeby przyszłych dregowych i sigmarowych konwersji, zdecydowałem się dać Cracktombowi i Pikk ręce z pudełka Deadwalker Zombies, odpowiadające raczej dążeniom do dobrania się do wnętrz czaszek.

Kurnoth's Heralds

Kurnoth's Heralds have one duty above all: to drive out the pests that plague the Forest. In this task, they are lead by Ylarin, master of the wood's ever-changing pathways and proud huntsman. Ylarin's hunters  - Cullon, armed with a heartwood axe, and keen-eyed Lenwythe - fight with ferocity, savagery, dextrous movements and silent coordination. These are no bloodthirsty killers; rather, they are embodiments of nature's ruthlessness.

Thanks to the new Warhammer Underworlds release, I unexpectedly found myself returning to my army of swamp-dwelling, elf-like creatures that appear on the blog under the codename Kurnothi. The mini is a head-swapped Lenwythe from the Kurnoth’s Heralds warband. At the bottom, there’s a photo showing it alongside the centaurs I’ve assembled so far.

Ludzik to zheadswapowana Lenwythe z ekipy Kurnoth's Heralds. Na spodzie zdjęcie w towarzystwie dotychczas skleconych centaurów.

I’m continuing the work on the Emberwatch crew. It's Yurik this time. I only noticed in the photos that I forgot to weather the bottom of the coat and add a few highlights. I’ll fix that before I take the group picture. [Edit: I uploaded pictures after weathering the coat and adding an OSL]

Działam dalej z ekipą Emberwatch. Dziś Yurik. Dopiero na zdjęciach zobaczyłem, że zapomniałem o brudzingu dołu płaszcza i pojedynczych highlighcikach. Się dorobi przy okazji grupowego. [Edit: zamieściłem foteczkę po dodaniu brudzingu i OSL-a].

Emberwatch - Farasa

A new Warhammer Underworlds season is upon us. Lots of new possibilities are opening up as the deck-building rules change, and I'm not yet sure which warband I'm going to play. However, I figured I can't go wrong with Emberwatch — a Stormcast warband with some fun abilities. In many ways, they are similar to the Farstriders, so I used their color scheme for them as well.

W najbliższą sobotę startuje nowy sezon Warhammer Underworlds. Zmodyfikowane zasady poszerzają możliwości składania decków i nie jestem jeszcze pewien, czym teraz będę grał. Mają fajne skille, więc pomyślałem, że nie zaszkodzi wziąć się za Stormcastów z ekipy o nazwie Emberwatch. Banda w wielu aspektach przypomina moich starych Farstriderów, postanowiłem więc zastosować podobny schemat kolorystyczny. Jako pierwszą pomalowałem Farasę. 

Kharadron Overlords - Vongrim Harpoon Crewmember

Here's my rendition of September's Warhammer Store Miniature of the Month - a member of the Kharadron Overlords Vongrim Harpoon Crew. I swapped the original head with a copy of one from the Long Drong Slayer Pirates Regiment of Renown from Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I like to think that he's somewhere in between the Age of Sigmar, the Old World, Slayer Pirates and Birdmen of Catrazza ;)

Trochę na przeczyszczenie palety między projektami, trochę na wypadek gdybym nie wymyślił nic lepszego na październikowy Figurkowy Karnawał Blogowy: krasnoludzki korsarz podwieszony pod lewitującą metaliczną sferą. To warhammerowa figurka miesiąca - członek Kharadron Overlords Vongrim Harpoon Crew - z główką podmienioną na ksero łebka Long Drongowego Slayer Pirate'a. Gdzieś koło AoS-a, gdzieś koło staroświeckich Regiments of Renown (Long Drong Slayer Pirates / Birdmen of Catrazza); do tego generalna kolisto-kulistość przyrządów latających i zakładam, że temat „Koło” jako tako zrealizowany :D

Grimdark Sisters of Sigmar Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial

Having returned to the Sisters of Sigmar after a longer break, I decided to write down my painting process so that future returns would be easier. I’m putting this list together mainly for myself, though I also hope it might be useful to someone else :) The model is the Sister Superior #4 Kitbash I've finished lately. Enjoy!

Powróciwszy po dłuższej przerwie do składania i malowania Sióstr Sigmara, postanowiłem skodyfikować proces malowania, żeby kolejne powroty były łatwiejsze. Rozpiskę robię więc przed wszystkim dla siebie, choć mam zarazem nadzieję, że ktoś skorzysta :) Obrazki wydają mi się zrozumiałe same przez się, więc - standardowo już dla tutoriali tego rodzaju - dodatkowe lanie wody zostawiam tylko po angielsku, żeby bloki tekstu nie przytłaczały objętością.

Underpainting

Because I'm aiming for dark and pale colors as usual, I am starting with black-to-dark-grey zenithal - just as in the Witch Hunters painting tutorial:

• I prime the mini black using Citadel Chaos Black Spray.
• When it cures, I spray the mini with Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey from a 45-degree angle.
• When it's dry, I drybrush the mini from up to down with Vallejo Model Color Blue Pale Grey.
• Finally, I wash it with Two Thin Coats Oblivion Black Wash.

Paints and techniques used

On the picture below there is a list of paints I used. I put the name of the manufacturer and the line the paint comes from in brackets after the name of the paint. For layering, highlighting, edge highlighting, and painting with scratchy lines I put the paints on a wet palette and paint with many thin coats.  For stippling - the main technique I use to get cloth and leather texture - I use a dry palette and an old brush. I use the dry palette for washes and contrast paints as well.

I try to mimic the texture of materials with the way I paint them:

• when painting leather, I stipple the elevated areas with dots and scratchy lines;
• when painting fabrics, I stipple with dots;
• when painting metal, I use metallic paints in places where the light would reflect off.

The process helps to differentiate the surfaces even though the colors used to paint them are often similar.

Grimdark Sisters of Sigmar Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial

Dots-stippling in the first three steps doesn't have to be precise.
At this stage I use an old brush with a little paint (similarly to drybrushing) for it.

For scratchy lines on leather I use the most precise brush I have.
To make transitions on skin smoother, I cover previously highlighted areas of skin with a glaze made of diluted Bugman's Glow.

It's good to switch to a smaller old brush
when stippling with colors as bright as Pale Sand / Off-White mix.

To differentiate the finish on dark leather, I painted the cowl, boots and gloves with diluted Basilicanum Grey (satin finish) and left the body armor matt after covering it with Oblivion Black.

Zikkit's Tunnelpack

Processing the photos for the Sisters of Sigmar painting tutorial, which was originally planned for today, took longer than expected. So, I’m saving myself with some old shots and posting a previously unpublished group photo of Zikkit’s Tunnelpack :) Enjoy!

Zikkit Rockgnaw, a Warlock Engineer of the Clan Skryre, first came to Embergard seeking warpstone to augment his maniacal digging apparatus. As he roamed the mines, a loftier scheme occurred to his devious sensibilities: to collapse vast swathes of the tunnels, ruin Embergard, and turn it into prime ground for a city-sized weapons testing facility for the Clan Skryre. He is joined in this ambition by Rittak Vern (an apprentice who constructed a miniature Doomwheel with a Warp-Grinder), the lowly acolytes Krittatok and Nitch, and the ‘blast-vermin’ Tik-Tik.

Sisters of Sigmar - Sister Superior #4

After our last game of Mordheim, I became even more convinced that the steel whip is an amazing weapon. We played with the updated Sisters of Sigmar rules, where the troublesome and overpowered “Reach” was replaced by “Whiprack.” Since up until now I’d mostly focused on hammers for my Sisters Superior models, it was about time to put together some variants with whips. And voilà — here it is. In the process, I also nailed down a consistent painting workflow for the Sisters, so once I’ve sorted out the pictures and descriptions, a tutorial will be coming up.

I used the following parts for this model :

• legs, torso, and arms from the 40K (and previously Kill Team) Adepta Sororitas Novitiates box — with the grenade in the left hand replaced by a hammer made from green stuff, a bit of wire, and a weapon head from the WH:tOW Knights of the White Wolf; I also removed the arm pads and sculpted the cowl out of green stuff;

• a head from the 40k Adepta Sororitas Repentia Squad box;

• Sigmarite symbols from the Flagellants and Wildercorps Hunters kits copied with blue-stuff / milliput combo.

Po ostatniej grze w Mordheim utwierdziłem się w przekonaniu, że bicz to wspaniała broń. Graliśmy na zaktualizowane zasady, w których kłopotliwą i przegiętą właściwość „Reach” zastąpił „Whiprack”. Jako że dotąd w modelach Sióstr Przełożonych skupiałem się raczej na młotkach, powstała potrzeba poskładania wariantów z bacikami. No i cyk - jest. Przy okazji skodyfikowałem też proces malowania siostrzyczek, więc jak tylko obrobię zdjęcia i opisy, będzie tutek.

W modelu wykorzystałem:

• nogi, tors i ręce z czterdziestkowego (a wcześniej kill teamowego) pudełka Adepta Sororitas Novitiates - przy czym granat z lewej dłoni zastąpiłem młotkiem z green stuffu, drucika i główki borni ze staroświeckich Knights of the White Wolf, obciąłem naramienniki, a kołnierz wyrzeźbiłem z green stuffu;
• głowę z czterdziestkowego pudełka Adepta Sororitas Repentia Squad;
• odbitki sigmaryckich symboli z pudełka flagellantów i Wildercorps Hunters.

Grandfather's Gardeners

Here's something unusual for my blog: a whole warband at once. What's more, this is the second Grandfather's Gardeners team I've painted, and I'd never posted a group photo of the previous one — until now. So, here's what you'll find below:

Rzecz wyjątkowa: wrzucam na raz całą bandę, a - co więcej - jest to druga taka, którą pomalowałem. Zdjęć grupowych pierwszej nigdy (aż do teraz) nie wrzuciłem, zapraszam więc na gratkę jak rzadko:

• grupowe zdjęcie pierwszych pomalowanych przeze mnie, różowiutko-patynowych Ogrodników Dziadka wraz z linkami do indywidualnych foteczek (powyżej);
• grupowe zdjęcie drugiej pomalowanej przeze mnie ekipy Plaguebearerów, tym razem zielonkawo-fioletowawej (powyżej);
• indywidualne zdjęcia tych zielonkawych (poniżej).

Space Wolves Blood Claw

I like the Warhammer Stores Miniature of the Month (MotM) initiative as a push to paint something different than I usually paint and an opportunity to try new techniques and methods - with no need to stick with them throughout a whole warband. I painted August's MotM - Space Wolves Blood Claw - using some of the techniques I learned from Grimdark Compendium's How to Paint Space Wolves tutorial. Enjoy!

W kolejce do publikacji miałem akurat coś, co zdaje się pasować do wrześniowego tematu Figurkowego Karnawału Blogowego, którym jest „Egzotyczność”: zheadswapowany Space Wolves Blood Claw. Dlaczego rzecz uznaję za egzotyczną?

• Po pierwsze, ludziki do WH40K to na tym blogu rzadkość.
• Po drugie, użyłem kilku niestosowanych przeze mnie zbyt często technik weatheringu.
• Po trzecie, figurka dostała główkę z daleka - bo z blood bowlowej drużyny z Norski.
