Grimdark Witch Hunters Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial

AF here and some people on Facebook Mordheim Group asked for a Grimdark Witch Hunters painting tutorial. I had some time during the holidays, so I processed the step-by-step photos of Witch Hunter Captain I've painted recently and prepared what's below. Enjoy.

Ludzie na mordheimowej grupie na fejsie pytali o przepis na bladych witch hunterów. Korzystając z wolnego w trakcie przerwy świątecznej, opisałem zdjęcia kapitana łowców czarownic robione w trakcie jego malowania. Efekt poniżej. Jest po angielsku, żeby nie puchło od nadmiaru tekstu. Wierzę, że dacie radę :D

Underpainting

Because I'm aiming for dark and pale colors, I am starting with black-to-dark-grey zenithal:

• I prime the mini black using Citadel Chaos Black Spray.
• When it cures, I spray the mini with Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey from a 45-degree angle.
• When it's dry, I drybrush the mini from up to down with Vallejo Model Color Blue Pale Grey.
• Finally, I wash it with Two Thin Coats Oblivion Black Wash (In my opinion it's the closest to the old Citadel Nuln Oil).

Paints and techniques used

Here's the list of paints I used. I put the name of the manufacturer and the line the paint comes from in brackets after the name of the paint. For layering, highlighting, edge highlighting, and stippling with scratchy lines I put the paints on a wet palette and paint with many thin coats. If a mix of paints seems too vibrant, I tone it down with Citadel Eshin Grey or Corvus Black. For stippling - the main technique I use to get fabrics and light leather texture - I use a dry palette and an old brush. When I'm using the brightest colors and it needs to be more precise, I switch to a fine brush and put the dots exactly where I want them. The dry palette comes in handy for washes and contrast paints as well.

I try to mimic the texture of materials with the way I paint them:

• when painting leather, I stipple the elevated areas with dots or scratchy lines;
• when painting fabrics, I stipple with dots;
• when painting metal, I use metallic paints in places where the light would reflect off;
• when painting wood, I build up layers of thin lines.

It helps to differentiate the surfaces even though the colors used to paint them are often similar. Additionally, before priming the mini I add some texture (using Mordant Earth and Typhus Corrosion Citadel Technical Paints) to the bottom sections of the coat.

Grimdark Witch Hunter Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial

Stippling here and in the next step doesn't have to be precise.
At this stage I use an old brush with a little paint (similarly to drybrushing) for it.

At this stage I want my stippling dots to go where I want them,
so I switch from an old brush to a pointy one.

Before applying the enamel wash, I wait for the acrylics to cure completely.

I fix pigment with vodka. It doesn't change color of the pigment,
doesn't activate cured paints and let the pigment blend-in well. 

Witch Hunters - Witch Hunter Captain

I put together a third Cities of Sigmar Witch Hunter - this time with two guns - with a team captain in mind. You can swap heads (with and without a hat) and equipment (with or without a sword).  I took photos along the way, so when I process them, there will be a post with the painting steps.

Złożyłem trzeciego Cities of Sigmarowego Witch Huntera - tym razem z dwoma pistoletami - z myślą o kapitanie ekipy. Można wymieniać główki (z kapeluszem i bez) i ekwipunek (z mieczem lub bez).  Robiłem po drodze zdjęcia, więc jak je obrobię, będzie zapis kolejnych malarskich kroków.

Happy Holidays! A merry Squig

Happy Holidays, guys! Here's a gnarly squig conversion inspired by Grotmas Squig from this year's GW commemorative series. I sent it to the Dark Oak's Bahior as part of the Holiday Mini Exchange. Because the recipient plays a goblin pirate warband, I made the squig interchangeable magnetized headwear pieces - one for the holidays and one for his pirate life :) Have yourself a merry little squig-mas!

Wesołych Świąt, drodzy! Z okazji Świątecznej Wymiany Figurkowej skleciłem model inspirowany tegorocznym grotmas squigiem. Jako że obdarowywałem grającego załogą zielonoskórych kaprów Bahiora z bloga the Dark Oak, oprócz reniferkowych rogów ulepiłem ludkowi piracką czapę. Nakrycia głowy są magnesowane, można więc swobodnie wymieniać je w zależności od sezonu :P Bombkowych Świąt!

Skabbik's Plaguepack

The diseased skaven of Skabbik's Plaguepack plan to usher in the birth of one of the ratmen's Great Plagues. Should this noisome flock succeed in their task, great swathes of Mortal Realms may be reduced to rancid rotting mulch. Let their enemies beware - a sickening death awaits any who stand in the path of the children of the Great Corruptor.

Skabbik's Plaguepack - Skritter

The last model from Skabbik's Plaguepack team - a small, mangy rat with a lump of wyrdstone. Inspired by the hairy skaven of the Dark Ages Workshop, I tried to add some fur to the figure and I think it turned out quite disgusting ;) Photo of the complete team to be published on Saturday! 

Ostatni model z ekipy Skabbik's Plaguepack - mały, parchaty szczurek z grudką spaczenia. Zainspirowany włochatymi skavenami Dark Ages Workshop, próbowałem dodać figurce trochę futerka i wyszło chyba całkiem obrzydliwie ;) W sobotę zdjęcie ekipy w komplecie!

The Thricefold Discord - Lascivyr

After finishing Skabbik's Plaguepack warband (I'll post the rat and the group photo soon). I started painting the next Warhammer Underworlds team: The Thricefold Discord, Demons of Slaanesh from Deathgorge Core Box. The first model I painted is Lascivyr, the Bladed Blessing.

I got back to the Warhammer Quest: Cursed City project and painted a Vargskyr - the games variation of Soulblight Gravelords' Vargheist. There are only two Agents of Defiance, two zombie ogres, a few rat swarms and some markers left to paint for the set to be complete :) Enjoy!

W poprzednim tygodniu realizowałem temat listopadowego Karnawału Blogowego: „Numero Uno”, malując Skabbika, dowódcę bandy Skabbik's Plaguepack. Tym razem wziąłem się za największy model z pudełka Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. Oto nietoperzowilkowampir zwany w Ulfenkarn Vargskyrem.

Ostatni duży model ze Skabbik's Plaguepack - Skabbik Plagueseeker. W planie minimum będzie jako lider ekipy moim wpisem w ramach listopadowego Figurkowego Karnawału Blogowego, ale liczę, że uda się zmieścić w tym miesiącu jeszcze jeden albo dwa projekty pod hasłem „Numero Uno”.

FKB CXI: Numero Uno

Numero Uno

Figurkowy Karnawał Blogowy (FKB) to trwająca od ponad 9 lat zabawa blogerów, w której co miesiąc jedna osoba wybiera pozostałym temat (zestawienie dotychczasowych haseł i „hasłowych” dostępne jest tutaj). Zadaniem „pozostałych” jest przygotowanie posta stanowiącego interpretację bieżącego tematu. W listopadzie 2023 r. z okazji 111., trzyjedynkowej edycji FKB hasło brzmi następująco: „Numero Uno”.

Największy zakapior, przywódca ekipy, bandy lub armii; pierwszy model z nowej paczki, początek czegoś, czego jeszcze nie było; a może - od języka, w którym „numero uno” znaczy „numer jeden” - coś włoskiego lub inspirowanego słoneczną Italią? Słowem - wszystko co pasuje wprost albo ledwo-ledwo. Zapraszam do wpisania się w temat i udziału :)

Happy Halloween! Witch Hunter #2

Happy Halloween! What's a more fitting thing to do on the holiday than to explore graveyards, decapitate zombies, and hunt for vampires and witches? Nothing - a witch hunter would say. Here's the next hero for my Mordheim Witch Hunters warband. The model is a kitbash (Cursed City Jelsen Darrock body, flagellant head, zombie head and Bladegheist Revenants sword). It aims to depict one of the classic Mordheim minis: the one referred to as Witch Hunter Captain #1 in a Games Workshop Catalog available on Stuff of Legends.

Trochę z myślą o Halloween, a trochę ze względu na to, że pierwszy model z tej serii (Witch Hunter #1) był dość satysfakcjonujący, poskładałem drugiego łowcę czarownic nawiązującego do klasycznych modeli z  pudełka Witch Hunterów z Mordheim. Jest plan na kolejne ludki bazujące na tym pomyśle. Czas pokaże, kiedy uda się wcielić go w życie.

Cursed City Qulathis the Exile

I got back to painting Agents of Defiance from Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. I've painted Qulathis the Exile according to my Grimdark Wood Elves painting tutorial without the gloss varnish step. Along the way I figured out that you just have to wait long enough between using acrylics and oils for the previous stage to cure. Anyway, she is to fit both my Cursed City Agents of Defiance crew and multi-system Kurnothi/Swampfiend force.

Za sprawą Kapitana Haka tematem październikowego Figurkowego Karnawału Blogowego jest „Maszyna”. Do zmalowania tego, co zmalowałem, zachęciło mnie PWN, a konkretnie - następujące zdanie z definicji tytułowego hasła: „Za pierwsze urządzenie do przetwarzania energii, a więc za najstarszą maszynę, uznaje się łuk”. Wykorzystałem je jako pretekst do powrotu do Cursed City i wzięcia się za tamtejszą łuczniczkę: Qulathis the Exile.
