FKB LXXVII: Leaves sculpting tutorial

Converting Avatar of Kurnous, I made some leaves for the belt and the weapon. I thought they may come in handy for Sylvaneth and Wood Elves and someone might find a description of the process useful, so I've made a step-by-step leaves sculpting tutorial. Enjoy!

Przy okazji konwertowania awatara Kurnousa wyprodukowałem trochę listków na pas i broń. Przyszło mi do głowy, że mogą służyć nie tylko jako ozdoba, ale także jako kamuflaż - w sam raz na temat Figurowego Karnawału Blogowego, który Pepe z fantasy w miniaturze zaproponował na styczeń. Poniżej przepis.

Tools and materials

You're gonna need: Green Stuff, a base, a (hobby) knife.

Potrzebne będą: Green Stuff, podstawka, nożyk.

I've painted cutting lines to make 'em visible, but you may cut the shapes straight away.

Na obrazkach linie cięcia zaznaczyłem farbką, ale równie dobrze można od razu ciąć.

Preparation

Put a thin, narrow stripe of Green Stuff on a base and let it cure completely.

Nałóż na podstawkę cienki, płaski pasek Green Stuffu i daj mu całkowicie stwardnieć.

Stage I

Cut diagonal lines making shapes similar to letters A and V.

Wytnij skośne linie, by uzyskać kształty podobne do liter A i V.

Stage II

In central part of each shape make two cuts meeting on the broader edge.

W środkowej części każdego kształtu zrób dwa nacięcia łączące się na szerszej krawędzi.

Stage III

Make cuts from the central part to each of side edges

Zrób nacięcia odchodzące od środkowej części do obu bocznych krawędzi.

Stage IV

Make 2 diagonal cuts on the narrow side of each shape to make it more round.

Zrób 2 skośne nacięcia zaokrąglające węższą część każdego kształtu.

Stage V

Remove obsolete fragments of GS, trim leaves and take 'em off the base. It's done!

Usuń zbędne fragmenty GS-u, dotnij listki i odłącz je od podstawki. Gotowe!

Avatar of Kurnous

Kurnous is the God of the Hunt and the lord of wildplaces. He requires that a hunter never kills animals for sport but slays only ravening creatures or beasts whose bounty of meat and hide are necessary for survival. Those violating this creed will face wrath of the vengeful deity.*

Having wanted to use one of the leftover deer heads I got after converting centaur Wild Riders, I decided to make an avatar of Kurnous being an alternative to Orion. The mini was inspired by Total War: Warhammer Orion Concept art and a depiction of Kurnous in Warhammer Fantasy Wiki. I used my grimdark wood elves color scheme to paint it.

Postanowiłem zużyć jedną z jelenich głów, które zostały mi po "renifelfach" - cantaurowym wcieleniu Wild Riders, i poskładać alternatywnego wobec Oriona awatara Kurnousa. W figurce można znaleźć nieco elementów zaczerpniętych z concept artów Oriona z Total War: Warhammer. Z tyłu głowy miałem też przedstawiającą Kurnousa ilustrację z Wiki Warhammera Fantasy i kolorki moich mrocznych wood elfów.

Grimdark Wood Elves Painting Tutorial

Despite I basically picked Skaeth's Wild Hunt and Orion painting method from Ex Profundis Black Sloth Hell Swamp Aelves painting tutorial (just without airbrush) and talked about it from the beginning, people still asked for a more detailed guide. Vox populi, vox dei - or so I've heard. So, without further ado, here comes a step-by-step grimdark wood elves (and kurnothi!) painting tutorial.

Mimo że sposób malowania Skaeth's Wild Hunt i Oriona wziąłem niemal 1:1 z zamieszczonego przez Ex Profundis tutoriala na temat malowania Swamp Aelfów z Black Sloth Hell (tylko bez aero) i wcale się z tym nie kryłem, ludzie prosili o bardziej szczegółową rozpiskę. Jak to mówią, vox populi, vox dei, więc, nie szczypiąc się, cyknąłem relację z kolejnych etapów prac nad grimdarkowym schematem malowania leśnych elfów (i "kurnockich" satyrów). Jako że nazwy farbek i technik i tak są po angielsku, dla porządku - z wyjątkiem komentarzy - podarowałem sobie niżej polskie wersje. Jeśli komuś to ułatwi, "skin", "fabrics", "leaves", "bones", "horns", "fur" to odpowiednio: "skóra", "tkaniny", "liście", "kości", "rogi" i "futro".

• Oil Wash: Mig: Slimy Grime Light, Track Wash, Dark Brown Wash for Green Vehicles, Enamel Odorless Thinner

• Fur: Skavenblight Dinge

Shade

• Skin: Athonian Camoshade, Agrax Eartshade

After that I applied Mr. Hobby Gloss Varnish from a can all over. It is said to preserve acrylic paints before applying oil washes and odorless thinner and improve the flow of the washes. Not sure if it is necessary, just haven't tried it without it. What's important: acrylic shades don't really flow on a surface varnished this way, so it's good to finish all work with them before spraying it over mini.

Po tym kroku spsikałem wszystko Gloss Varnishem Mr. Hobby z puchy. Podobno chroni warstwę akryli przed wpływem olejnych washy i ich rozcieńczalnika i poprawia spływanie w zagłębienia. Nie jestem pewien, czy ten krok jest konieczny, ale nie próbowałem jeszcze intensywnie washować w ten sposób z jego pominięciem. Co ważne, akrylowe shade'y nie płynęły mi jak trzeba po tak przygotowanej powierzchni, więc starałem się skończyć wszystkie prace z ich użyciem przed psikaniem.

Oil Wash

• Skin: Track Wash, Slimy Grime Light
• Fabrics / Leaves: Track Wash
• Bones / Horns: Track Wash
• Fur: Dark Brown for Green Vehicles

I covered all the respective surfaces with washes and diluted and put them into recesses using Odorless Thinner afterwards. You can finish here or add some layers of highlights to regain control of light. For that I mostly used the colors used previously (Ulthuan Grey / Pallid Wych Flesh on skin / bone) with some white and Citadel Elysian Green on Leaves / Fabrics. If the glossy finish annoys you too much, you can finish off with matt varnish.

Po pokryciu danym washem całego obszaru rozcieńczyłem go i rozprowadziłem w zagłębieniach Odorless Thinnerem. Można na na tym skończyć albo dodać kilka warstw rozjaśnień, żeby odzyskać kontrolę nad światłem. Używałem do tego głównie wykorzystanych wcześniej kolorów (Ulthuan Grey / Pallid Wych Flesh na skórze / kości) z odrobiną białego i Citadelowego Elysian Green na liściach i tkaninach. Jeśli  po wszystkim ludzik świeci się za bardzo, można wykończyć go matowym varnishem.

FKB LXIX: Orion, the King in the Woods

Painting Kurnoth's worshippers of Skaeth's Wild Hunt reminded me of an avatar of the god lying somewhere in my closet. Below you'll find an Orion's, the King in the Woods' description from the 6th edition Wood Elves Army Book and pictures of the mini.

Malując wyznawców boga łowów ze Skaeth's Wild Hunt nie sposób było sobie nie przypomnieć, że  gdzieś w szafie zalega jego dawne wcielenie. Żeby się wziąć za jego malowanie, niecnie przejąłem majowy Karnawał i zaproponowałem temat, do którego by pasował. W Army Booku wood elfów do szóstej edycji o Królu Lasu, Orionie,  pisali tak:

Wood Elves Dryad #2

I've painted the second dryad as well. It's a shame I don't have any more of them - they're very quick and fun to paint. Here's a link to the first one. A picture of the pair to be found below.

Wood Elves Dryad (FKB LIV)

"Forest" was a painting topic given by Luca Lagao this month. I dug up an old dryad, washed it and painted as a test of color scheme to be used on Ylthari’s Guardians. It looks like that.

Luca Lagao zarządził w ramach FKB, że w lutym malować będziemy las. Wykopałem starą driadę, zmyłem i pomalowałem - już z myślą o schemacie kolorystycznym, którego będę chciał użyć przy okazji zapowiedzianych ostatnio (nomen omen w LAS Vegas) Ylthari’s Guardians. Wygląda to tak.

Przy okazji podsumowania minionego roku zdałem sobie sprawę, że nie wrzuciłem wszystkiego, co pomalowałem do leśnych elfów z Blood Bowla. Nadrabiam zaległość. Dziś pierwsza z dwóch transz: łapacze.

FKB XLIX: Blood Bowl WE Dryad

"Jesień" - temat Karnawału zaproponowany przez Morpheusa z the Fantasy Hammer podszedł mi jak rzadko. W dniu ogłoszenia kończyłem akurat driadę z żółtymi akcentami, przewodnimi dla będącej obecnie na tapecie drużyny. Dowaliłem wrzos, złotolistną gałązkę i jest.
